Tutorial Tuesday: Knit Ear Warmer

Hello. Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday!

Today's pattern is for knitting, and it is very easy - I could have made this when I was just beginning. Ear warmers / head wraps have been pretty popular, but tend to require increase and decrease stitches that can be intimidating to the new knitter - this pattern doesn't have those. It is also easily adjusted to suit different size heads, so you could make them for children as well.

You can access the pattern at Elisa McLaughlin Designs

When I made one earlier this year, I used the seed stitch instead of the garter stitch, I also chose not to wrap the point where the ends join, and wanted mine to scrunch rather than fold flat, as you can see below. I used Vanna's Choice yarn in Kelly Green (one of my favorite colors).

If you like the seed stitch (sorry, the picture is not too clear) and would prefer to use that instead of the garter stitch, it is pretty easy. All you need to know is how to make a knit stitch, and how to make a purl stitch. All the seed stitch is, is alternating those two stitches within the same row. The only trick is that you need to begin the following row with the same stitch that you ended your last row with. This can get a little confusing when you are working with an even number of stitches and you set your work aside for a while. To avoid this I will typically use odd numbered rows, say 15 stitches to a row, so that I always begin and end with the same stitch. You usually start with the knit stitch, so it just goes knit, purl, knit, purl, etc, until you finish your row. Hopefully I didn't confuse you too much with that description! If I did, just leave a comment or send me an email and I can help you out.

Well, that is all for today's tutorial. Thanks for stopping by!
